The details are the most beautiful part

An angel in flowing robes gestures towards a woman in a blue cloak holding a book. They're in an ornate room with golden arches.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude! I’m so grateful for this holiday and the time I’m spending with family and friends. And grateful for beautiful spaces and places, like one of my favorites to visit this time of year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

And for the transformers of spaces like the builders and trades we get to work with and the makers and manufacturers of magnificent things to complete those spaces.

The owner of a showroom asked for my feedback on a line of fabrics he was creating inspired by an antique Suzani textile. He had just placed it in my hands, and the antique, hand made treasure I held was so wonderful, my hands began to shake and tears welled up in my eyes.

My team and I depend on these beautiful things and the people who create them, whether it’s fabric or wallpaper, carpet, paintings, furniture, or tile. The success of the interiors we create rely on the makers and the installers who do things that instantly elevate the spaces we are finishing.

Beauty is in the details

Here are a few examples of the extraordinary work from our vendors:

  • The owner of a workroom thanked me for trusting her to rise to the challenging task of cutting up a client’s rug and covering an odd shaped cushion.

  • A curtain maker recently said, “Gretchen, we really should hand sew these curtain rings onto the panels.” It was more work he was willing to do for the betterment of the project.

  • A wonderful tile installer showed how he sketched in pencil, precise lines where every tile would sit on the walls and floors of an enormous bathroom because he cared greatly that it all lay out just so.

  • The builder we’re working with said, “no problem Gretchen, we can have you meet with the stone fabricator when he is at the house.”  My builder knew I wanted to leave a 1/16” of an inch space behind the counter for the wallpaper installer to tuck the paper behind it.

These tiny little details are huge. The details are the most beautiful part. And we are so grateful to work with people who have such passion.

There is much work to be done

And wow have we got work to do! We have walls to wallpaper, wood floors and rugs to lay, fabrics to find, curtains to hang, and shades to make.

There’s old furniture to re-upholster and new pieces to find, like chairs to relax by the fire in, with ottomans for our tired legs and throws to cover them.  And more chairs for our friends to get cozy in and stay a while.

We need lights to read by and fixtures to illuminate our tables and more to highlight our island countertops for us to gather around.

We are on the look out for all these things, all the time….for you or because of you we are finding them, and we are so very grateful. Like this wallpaper we found and are itching to create a whole room around it.

A spark of inspiration

Bold leaf-patterned wallpaper, sisal rug, and various textured fabric samples in neutral tones. Text labels detail brands and materials.
Inspiration for a "White Room"

This Kravet wallpaper design has such a positive vibe. The thick confident lines of the botanical pattern with it’s bright white, stark against the soft grey-beige background is a perfect beginning. It sets the mood.

To work with this bold white patterned wallpaper makes us think of a clean slate, new beginnings. We like the chunky weave of this sisal. The heavy white lines of the wallpaper and the chunky sisal weave belong together. As a balancing act we want to add some softness and the soft pale oak floor is a great grounding feature. A room is a series of layers. The floor, the rug, the furnishings, the walls, the ceiling, the windows and the treatments for them.

Getting these layers right is key to creating a space that feels good to be in. We don't know when we will bring this design to life, however, when we do, we will call on some of our amazing makers and vendors to bring their passion, expertise and exquisite attention to details to help us.

Feel Good At Home.

Happy Holidays!
